THE MITZVAH
Inspection and repairs
The mitzvah of regular inspection
The sages of our tradition understood that holiness requires vigilance. The Shulchan Aruch (Yoreh De’ah 291:1) instructs us that a mezuzah adorning a private dwelling must undergo examination twice within each seven-year cycle—approximately every 3½ years. This wisdom extends to tefillin as well; the Mishna Berura (39:26), drawing upon the Magen Avraham’s teachings, prescribes a similar seven-year inspection schedule. Today’s poskim go further, advocating annual examination even for mehudar tefillin to preserve their kashrut status.
Just as the mezuzah stands sentinel over our homes, we must stand guardian over the mezuzah itself. A sofer stam with proper expertise should periodically evaluate these sacred texts to detect any p’sul (invalidation) caused by environmental hazards—moisture, ultraviolet rays, insects, or other mazikim. Though typically housed within protective batim, extended exposure to shamayim’s elements can compromise even the finest klaf. While specially processed animal hide forms a durable foundation for Hashem’s words, its organic nature renders it vulnerable to the inevitable march of time.
With passing seasons, both mezuzot and tefillin face potential degradation that may render them pasul. The challenges are numerous: summer’s heat, winter’s chill, changing humidity, unexpected precipitation, and even the shemen from our fingertips can affect the k’tav and klaf, causing hitpashtut (spreading of ink) or other forms of deterioration. Entrusting these kedoshim to a qualified sofer for timely bedikah ensures they remain kosher vessels worthy of the divine words they contain.
